The Ottermas Tradition

Ottermas is a holiday observed on December 26, primarily by North American River Otters and some Sea Otters along the North American coast. It is also observed by some Asian Small Clawed Otters.

Ottermas is celebrated by the exchange of small stones. Otters often use stones as tools for prying open clams. They also juggle stones as a form of entertainment. An otter has a small flap of skin under its arms, like a pocket, that can be used to store a favorite stone for safe keeping. On Ottermas otters will exchange stones with friends and family as a way of celebrating their kinship.

Merry Ottermas!
